The sign you know from magazines is your sun sign, worked out from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Your rashi is your Moon sign, worked out from the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology.

The two systems have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so most people get a different answer from each. If this page tells you something other than the sign you have called yourself for years, nothing has gone wrong. You are looking at a different measurement.

Vedic astrology leans on the Moon rather than the Sun because the Moon governs the mind, which is where daily prediction actually lives. Your rashifal is written for this sign, not your sun sign.

The rashi itself, the exact degree the Moon had reached inside it, the house it occupies in your chart, and your nakshatra with its ruling planet.

The degree is worth a look. A Moon at 29 degrees is about to change sign, so a small error in your birth time can move it. If you are near a boundary, take the result as approximate.

Why the nakshatra matters

The 12 signs are the coarse view. The 27 nakshatras divide the same circle far more finely, which is why Vedic astrology uses them for matching, timing and naming.

Two people can share a rashi and have completely different nakshatras, and in practice the nakshatra often describes someone better than the sign does.

Why the two zodiacs disagree

Both systems divide the sky into twelve. They disagree about where to start counting.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which begins at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which begins from a fixed star position. Because the Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, a motion called precession, those two starting points have drifted apart at roughly one degree every seventy two years.

The gap is now about twenty four degrees, a little under one sign. That is the entire reason your rashi is usually the sign before your Western sun sign. Neither system is broken. They are measuring from different origins, and the difference is called ayanamsa.

What your Moon sign is actually used for

In Vedic astrology the Moon is the anchor for far more than personality. Daily, weekly and yearly rashifal is written against the Moon sign. Sade Sati is measured from it. The Vimshottari dasha sequence, which sets the timing of everything, starts from the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth.

That is why an Indian astrologer will ask for your rashi rather than your sun sign, and why reading a horoscope written for the wrong sign gives you nothing useful.

The Moon also governs the mind and the emotional temperament, which is the practical reason it carries more weight in prediction. The Sun describes the self you present. The Moon describes how you actually feel about it.

The 27 nakshatras, and why they are the finer instrument

Twelve signs divide the circle into thirty degree blocks. Twenty seven nakshatras divide the same circle into blocks of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes, and each of those is divided again into four padas.

That is more than four times the resolution. Two people born under the same rashi can sit in different nakshatras with different ruling planets, and in practice the nakshatra often describes someone more accurately than the sign does.

Nakshatras also do the real work in traditional practice. Kundli matching scores are built from them, the dasha sequence starts from them, and in many families the first letter of a child's name is chosen from the pada of their birth star.

Moon sign, sun sign, rising sign

Three different questions, three different answers, and mixing them up is the most common reason a reading feels wrong.

Your Moon sign is where the Moon sat at birth, and it governs the mind. Your sun sign is where the Sun sat, and it governs the core self. Your rising sign, the Lagna, is the sign that was on the eastern horizon at the exact minute you were born, and it sets the entire house structure of the chart.

The rising sign is the one most sensitive to birth time, changing roughly every two hours. The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days, so it is far more forgiving if your recorded time is approximate.
