What Purnima Is in Jyotish
Purnima is the full moon tithi, the 15th and final tithi of the bright half of the lunar month (Shukla Paksha). It happens when the Moon stands directly opposite the Sun, 180 degrees apart, so the side of the Moon facing Earth is fully lit. The next day the waning half (Krishna Paksha) begins, ending at Amavasya, the new moon.
In Vedic astrology the Moon (Chandra) is the karaka of manas, the mind and emotions, and of the mother. That is why a full Moon is felt as emotional fullness and clarity, and why Jyotish gives your Moon sign (rashi) so much weight. A lunar eclipse (Chandra grahan) can only happen on a Purnima, when the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow near the Rahu-Ketu axis.
Purnimas That Matter in the Hindu Calendar
Hindu lunar months are named after the nakshatra the Moon occupies around its full moon, and many major observances fall on Purnima:
- Guru Purnima (Ashadha): honouring teachers, also observed as Vyasa Purnima.
- Raksha Bandhan (Shravana Purnima): the rakhi festival between brothers and sisters.
- Sharad Purnima (Ashvin): the harvest full moon, traditionally kept with kheer left out in the moonlight.
- Kartik Purnima: holy dips and lamp lighting, also celebrated as Dev Deepawali.
- Holika Dahan (Phalguna Purnima): the bonfire on the eve of Holi.
- Buddha Purnima (Vaishakha): marking the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha.
Many families also keep a Purnima vrat or hear the Satyanarayan katha on the full moon every month. Exact Purnima start and end times change with your city, so check a panchang before fixing a ritual.
The Spiritual Meaning of the Full Moon
The full moon represents completion, illumination, and heightened emotions. It shines light on areas of your life that need attention and offers the perfect opportunity to release limiting beliefs, toxic patterns, and fears.
At the same time, it amplifies manifestation energy, making it a powerful phase for setting intentions and visualizing your goals. Many spiritual traditions recommend performing release rituals under the full moon to create space for new blessings.
Full Moon Ritual Ideas
Here are some practices to harness the energy of the full moon:
- Journaling: Write down what you want to release and what you want to attract into your life.
- Candle or Fire Ritual: Safely burn a paper with old fears or habits to symbolize letting go.
- Meditation: Visualize your intentions while sitting under the moonlight.
Working with Moon Cycles
The full moon is just one part of the lunar cycle. By aligning your energy with the phases of the moon (new moon for beginnings, full moon for manifestation, waning moon for release) you can create balance and flow in all areas of life.
