What is the Panchang?

Panchang means "five limbs" — the five measures that define a day in the Vedic calendar. Together they describe the position of the Sun and Moon and the quality of the day for any activity you might plan.

  • Tithi — the lunar day, set by the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon. There are thirty tithis in a lunar month, fifteen in the waxing Shukla Paksha and fifteen in the waning Krishna Paksha.
  • Nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon occupies, one of twenty-seven, each divided into four padas and ruled by a planet.
  • Yoga — one of twenty-seven combinations derived from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon.
  • Karana — half of a tithi; eleven karanas rotate through the month. Vishti Karana, also called Bhadra, is traditionally avoided.
  • Vara — the weekday, each ruled by a planet, which is what fixes the daily Rahu Kaal and Gulika Kaal windows.

How the timings are calculated

Sunrise and sunset are computed for the exact latitude and longitude of your city, and the day between them is divided into eight parts. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal each occupy one of those parts, and which part depends on the weekday. Because the calculation starts from local sunrise, these timings genuinely differ from city to city — a panchang for Delhi will not match one for Chennai on the same date.
