Rising Sign Calculator, Your Lagna
The sign climbing over the horizon at your birth. It sets every house in your chart, and it is the one placement that genuinely needs an accurate time.
What the rising sign is
As the Earth turns, the zodiac appears to rotate past the eastern horizon. Whichever sign was rising there at the exact minute of your birth is your Lagna, your ascendant, your rising sign.
The whole zodiac passes the horizon once a day, so the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. That makes it the fastest moving thing in your chart and the one most sensitive to birth time.
Why it decides the shape of the chart
Your Lagna becomes the first house. Every other house is counted from it. Move the Lagna by one sign and every planet in your chart lands in a different house, which changes what each one is read to govern.
That is why an astrologer will press you on the birth time and why a chart drawn from a guessed time is worth very little. Mars in the seventh and Mars in the eighth are different readings, and two hours can be the whole difference.
It is also why the same person can be told they are Manglik by one astrologer and not by another, if the two are working from different birth times.
Rising sign, sun sign, moon sign
Three placements, three jobs. The rising sign builds the house structure and describes how you meet the world. The Sun describes the core self. The Moon governs the mind and is what Vedic prediction actually runs on.
Western astrology tends to lead with the Sun. Vedic astrology leads with the Moon and the Lagna, and treats the Sun as one planet among nine.
If you do not know your birth time
You are not stuck, but be honest about the uncertainty. A rough time still gives a usable Moon sign and nakshatra, since those move far more slowly.
Astrologers use birth time rectification to narrow an unknown time by working backwards from events that have already happened. It is skilled work and it is not something a calculator can do. If your time is genuinely unknown, ask Aura AI and it will tell you which parts of your reading are safe and which are not.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between rising sign and sun sign?
The rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, which changes every two hours. The sun sign is where the Sun was, which changes once a month. They answer different questions and usually differ.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
For the rising sign, as accurate as you can get it. The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, so being an hour out can move it into the neighbouring sign and shift every house in the chart.
Is the Vedic rising sign the same as the Western one?
Usually not. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and Western uses the tropical, and the two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so the Lagna often falls in the previous sign.
Why is the rising sign called the Lagna?
Lagna is the Sanskrit term for the ascending point. Charts are commonly named after it, so a Taurus Lagna chart is one where Taurus was rising at birth.
