What Are Planetary Transits?
A planetary transit, called gochar in Sanskrit, is the current movement of a planet through the zodiac, read against the positions in your birth chart. These movements reflect cycles of growth, transformation, and lessons in different areas of life.
Classical Jyotish reads transits mainly from your natal Moon sign (Chandra rashi) rather than from the Sun sign. A transit counted from the Moon shows how a period feels and what it brings, and a well-placed or afflicted natal planet changes how strongly you experience it. Transits also work alongside your dasha: a transit tends to deliver results that your running dasha already promises, rather than acting on its own.
How Long Each Graha Stays in a Sign
Vedic astrology works with the nine grahas. Their approximate time in one sign sets the pace of each transit:
- Moon (Chandra): about two and a quarter days, which is why daily horoscopes follow it.
- Sun (Surya): about a month; each change of sign is a sankranti.
- Mercury (Budh) and Venus (Shukra): roughly a month on average, since they stay close to the Sun; longer when retrograde.
- Mars (Mangal): usually around one and a half to two months, and several months when retrograde.
- Jupiter (Guru): about a year.
- Saturn (Shani): about two and a half years.
- Rahu and Ketu: about eighteen months, always moving backwards and always opposite each other.
The slow movers, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, mark the long chapters of life. The best-known example is Sade Sati, the roughly seven and a half years when Saturn transits the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it.
For example, Jupiter’s transits often bring expansion, abundance, and new opportunities, while Saturn’s influence may bring responsibility, structure, and important life lessons.
How Transits Affect Your Life
- Career: Transits highlight times for promotions, job changes, or building discipline in your professional path.
- Relationships: Venus and Mars transits can bring passion, challenges, or opportunities for deep connection.
- Personal Growth: The slow transits of Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu shape long-term transformation, discipline and spiritual growth. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto belong to Western astrology and are not part of the classical Vedic system.
Why Timing Matters
Understanding transits helps you align actions with cosmic rhythms. Instead of resisting change, you can use astrology as a tool to plan wisely, embrace challenges, and maximize growth opportunities.
